The book results from conversations the editors had in the summer of 1989, immediately after the Sudanese civilian government of Sadiq al-Mahdi was ousted by a military coup.

Since June 1989 many aspects of the civil war and of the problems that caused it have grown worse. The suffering of the Sudanese people, especially but no means only in the South, continues. Various attempts to mediate have failed. Events point increasingly towards stalemate, mirroring the apparently unbreachable gulf between the ideologies informing the two sides.
