Visiting Czech President hails “historic” trip to Senegal

African Update – 01/01/12

Visiting Czech President Vaclav Klaus described his trip to Senegal at the end of November as “historic”, claiming that his talks with President Abdoulaye Wade have been “friendly and constructive”.

“I have seen this visit to Senegal as a historic trip. I can say we were well prepared for this visit. This is the reason of our large delegation,” said President Klaus when he arrived for a four-day working visit to Senegal. The Czech leader was presiding over the opening ceremony of a business forum between Czech and Senegalese businesspeople organized by the Dakar Chamber of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture in Dakar, with the attendance of many officials of both countries. He added that his talks with his Senegalese counterpart have been mutually “friendly and constructive”. “Our talks with President Wade have been very friendly and constructive and we are convinced that our exchanges will yield results”, he said, urging investors of both countries to work towards the expansion of trade exchanges between Senegal and the Czech Republic. Earlier, the Czech leader laid a wreath on the Dial Diop Camp, in memory of soldiers who died on the national call of duty. Mr. Klaus and his wife will also visit the African Renaissance Monument before a leisure outing at the Bandia Park and Saly Portudal (80km from Dakar) along the Atlantic Ocean.

How Rich Countries Got Rich...and Why Poor Countries Stay Poor

Erik S. Reinert

In this refreshingly revisionist history, Erik S. Reinert shows how rich countries developed through a combination of government intervention, protectionism, and strategic investment—rather than through free trade. Yet when our leaders lecture poor countries on the right path to riches they do so in almost perfect ignorance of the fact that our economies were founded on protectionism long before they could afford the luxury of free trade. How Rich Countries Got Rich… will challenge economic orthodoxy and open up the debate on why self-regulating markets are not the best answer to our hopes of worldwide prosperity.More
