Screening and discussion about development assistance in Africa

  • Prague School for Economics, room RB213
  • 02/11/10 19:30

Invitation to a screening and discussion with Sebastian Lindström who has lived and worked in West Africa and authored many successful movies dealing with efficiency of development aid and developing countries in general.

Sebastian is currently on a 3-week tour across the United States and Europe and in cooperation with FL Ventures will have the honour to welcome him in Prague. Main reason behind the tour is his new movie „Across Africa: Morocco to South Africa In Search Of Unsung Heroes“ (see trailer here) depicting stories of NGOs in Africa and challenges they are facing. The film was created last year, when Sebastian and his team travelled through 16 African countries, living and working with 22 local NGOs.

After screening the short movie, an interactive discussion regarding efficiency of development aid will follow, concluded by written action plan for its improvement.

The event will take place on November 2nd at the University of Economics in Prague from 7:30pm in room RB213.

I would kindly ask you to confirm your attendance until October 29th by registering here or at this facebook event.

Entry is free and the whole event will be in English.

How Rich Countries Got Rich...and Why Poor Countries Stay Poor

Erik S. Reinert

In this refreshingly revisionist history, Erik S. Reinert shows how rich countries developed through a combination of government intervention, protectionism, and strategic investment—rather than through free trade. Yet when our leaders lecture poor countries on the right path to riches they do so in almost perfect ignorance of the fact that our economies were founded on protectionism long before they could afford the luxury of free trade. How Rich Countries Got Rich… will challenge economic orthodoxy and open up the debate on why self-regulating markets are not the best answer to our hopes of worldwide prosperity.More
