For more than a decade, Angola and Mozambique have been subjected to invasions, covert warfare, economic sabotage, assassinations and disinformations – all emanating from South Africa – as a part of a deliberate campaign to destabilize their governments and destroy their independence. The Reagan administration has openly backed this policy – supplying arms, training personnel, and providing financial aid – while South African’s western allies have distanced themselves from apartheid and tacitly endorsed its activities. Nationalism, socialism and anti-racism were the pride of the newly independent Southern Africa. The west is a partner in South Africa’s attempt to bury that pride in dusty rubble. Victoria Brittain provides both on overview and a series of eye-witness accounts. Africa and its people are brought vividly before us and a coherent, if horrifying, pattern is revealed in the superficial chaos and the bitter fruits of independence.
