The contributors to this volume are concerned with some of the consequences that development interventions have had for ordinary people and with some of the environmental concomitants of particular interventions.
However intractable the problems appear, especially in the fragile arid environment, the contributors share the determination to help limit environmental and human degradation. They all raise the question of how to redeem the people who live in the arid lands from their present predicament and how to enable them to manage their own future. Many insights have been sharpened by ideas well-known to peasants and pastoralists, but scarcely discussed among policy makers before development intervention takes place.
