On June 10 BetterAid member CONCORD launched the 2010 EU AidWatch report. It is the fifth time European NGOs have joined forces to produce a report assessing the quantity and quality of EU aid.
In theme with the MDG+10 review, the main message of the report is that more and better EU aid can help reaching the MDGs. However, the report notes that in 2009 EU aid decreased, thus making it almost impossible for Europe to reach its 2010 collective aid target, which was to provide official development assistance to the tune of 0.56% of GDP. At the current quota of 0.44%, EU aid falls far short.
Inspired by the World Cup in South Africa, the report is called “Penalty Against Poverty” and points out that progress on aid effectiveness has been too slow: it calls for speeding up the implementation of PD and AAA while promoting democratic ownership, a concept which is given a special focus in the report.
