Koinange-Wa-Mbiyu was a soft-spoken visionary who let actions speak for themselves, he started out by doing what he felt was right for his people’s survival, namely to coexist with the encroaching settler population. Then, when the colonial government amassed all the prime land it could wrest from the native populace, Koinange did the only thing possible – he fought back. He fought a colonial regime for his people’s right to their land. The country of Kenya emerged a free nation in 1963, something he had fought to realize for most of his life, but which he did not live to see.
