This book is a product of research into selected aspects of the oral culture of blacks in Zimbabwe. The book traces through song, theatre, poetry, novel, film, television and rituals of spirit possession, the multiple shifts in values, ideas and beliefs that have taken place in the black people's struggles for survival. This book urges the reader neither to diminish nor unduly celebrate oral culture in Zimbabwe, but to critically reread it in order to determine where and how orature has beeen annexed to serve exploitative interests.
