My choice for the titlte of this thesis was inspired by the remarks of an independent analyst that I met in Burundi. He compared the DRC and its natural wealth with Fontaine’s hen with the golden eggs. The high profits made from illegal exploitation of DRC’s natural resources are a motivator for the ongoing conflict that destroys the country, n that way the story of the DRC is comparable to that of the hen that is slaughtered by its greedy owner who is looking for the source of its golden eggs.
