La question abordée, c'est-à-dire l'activité commerçante des femmes, est une des réponses à la crise multidimensionnelle que traversent les villes de la République Démocratique du Congo.

Il s'agit d'un métier exercé par les femmes des mégapoles congolaises, notamment à Kinshasa, pour s'adapter à la nouvelle donne sociale. Peu de recherches, faut-il le souligner, ont été consacrées à ces nouveaux métiers des femmes urbaines en tant que réponses sinon moyens de s'adapter à ces nouvelles mutations sociales. Quant à la manière dont ce sujet est abordé, l'auteur a privilégié une grille de lecture particulière, c'est-à-dire l'incidence de l'activité commerçante des femmes sur l'éducation de leurs enfants.

Et ce, en partant du principe que dans la société congolaise, comme dans l'ensemble des sociétés de culture bantoue, c'est la femme qui est le pivot de l'éducation des enfants. Lorsqu'elle est absorbée par l'activité commerçante, durant toute la journée, elle ne peut assumer sa mission de mère et d'éducatrice que si elle bénéficie de l'appui des structures relais. Sinon sa tâche s'annonce périlleuse et l'éducation des enfants risque d'être hypothéquée.
