Poslední část zvažuje demokratické dimenze: symboliku volebního boje v afrických muslimských národech, kdy volby jsou spíše rituálem, který dává státu imaginativní smysl.

This book is an important study of African Islam and in particular Francophone West African Islam, and the way Africans imagine the state and its institutions. In the first part of this book, which considers Sufi Muslim societies in crisis, the Devil may stand as symbol of the state. The second part emphasises the importance of individual initiatives - people avoiding or flaunting the symbolic. The final part considers democratic dimensions, the symbolism of electioneering in African Muslim societies, where the election is a ritual which gives the state imaginative substance.
