Počínaje Brazzavillskou konferencí z roku 1944 autor popisuje snahy Francie o nalezení způsobu, jak racionálně sjednotit všechny země a lidi iracionálně sjednocené francouzskou koloniální expanzí, která by ukončila kolonialismus, ale zachovala by říši – snahy, které skončily rozpadem Společenství (Communauté) v roce 1960.

Since the end of World War II, the French colonial territories in West and Central Africa have achieved their independence. In describing how it came about this book concentrates on answering the simple and fundamental questions: who was who, who said and id what, when and where? From the Brazaville Conference of 1944 it traces the fortunes of France's attempt to find a formulae which would rationally unite the lands and peoples irrationally conglomerated by French colonial expansion, which would end colonialism but preserve the empire - an attempt which ended in the dissolution of the Communaute in 1960.
