Vysvětluje, jak se tento obchod postupně organicky vyvíjel z obchodu s otroky, jak se situace dramaticky změnila po té, co došlo k rozvoji parní dopravy mezi Británií a západní Afrikou v 50. letech devatenáctého století. To mělo za následek vážné problémy v obchodování v druhé polovině 19. století a vedlo k erozi vlivu afrických obchodníků a posléze úplné restrukturalizaci obchodu. Důsledkem byla krize na konci 19. století a s nástupem koloniální nadvlády pak přišel konec dlouhodobě etablovaných struktur tohoto obchodu.

This comprehensive study of palm oil trade covers the whole of the critical period for all of West Africa. It explains how the palm oil trade grew out of organization of slave trade. The situation changed sharply with the development of steam communication between Britain and West Africa from 1850s, leading to severe problems for the commerce in the second half of the century, the erosion of the African broker’s powers, and the restructuring of the trade thereafter. The result was a crisis within the trade towards the end of the century and, eventually, with the arrival of colonial rule, the ending of the long-established structures of the commerce.
