About seventy percent of the world’s cocoa is produced by West African
smallholders (FAO 2002). The typical production system involves clearing virgin forestto plant new trees, and later replacing old cocoa plantations with food crops (Ruf, 1994).
The future of such cocoa-led deforestation is an urgent question for both
environmentalists and for the cocoa industry, as West Africa’s forest resources become increasingly scarce and valuable.
